China announces vast solar heating expansion
China is challenging Europe's claims to be the world leader in building renewables by investing $30 billion over the next decade on renewables and carbon emissions reduction.
It has already installed 130 million square metres of solar thermal collectors and has announced plans to install more as part of a strategy to achieve 20 per cent of its energy needs from renewables by 2020. It also plans to install 100 million low energy lamps this year.
China has also announced plans to generate 100 gigawatts of power from wind farms.
