He told the assembled guests at the Royal Horticultural Halls in London that the building services industry had "a very great deal to contribute, through the promotion of renewable energy technologies and the delivery of low and zero-carbon systems and solutions".

David added that ECA and HVCA members were striving to accumulate the skills and competences they require "to take part in the sustainability revolution - and to derive maximum advantage from the commercial opportunities that are already emerging".

"The truth is that sustainability can no longer be viewed as an 'optional extra'. Designers and contractors can no longer afford to wait until legislation forces them to comply with higher standards and higher client expectations. The sustainability challenge is already providing
a massive opportunity for the building services sector to show that it can do a first-rate job and can increase its profit margins into the bargain."

M&E Sustainability was also a headline sponsor of the awards, which are organised by CMPi the publishers of Building Services Journal and Electrical and Mechanical Contractor magazine.
