HCFC users get final warning

Refrigerant users are running out of time to comply with ozone depletion laws. The British Refrigeration Association (BRA) has produced a Fact Finder to help contractors and their customers find their way through the Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) Regulation.

Users of R22, in particular, are warned that "there are critical time issues" associated with the Regulation and they need to be looking for alternatives now.

"The Regulation came into force on 1st October 2000 and HCFCs have been banned in all new equipment since 1st January 2004. However, the other key phase-out dates in the Regulation will shortly be coming into play," a BRA statement said.

  • It will be illegal to use virgin HCFCs after 31st December 2009 for the maintenance and servicing of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
  • As the regulation deals with a ban on use of virgin HCFCs there will be no possibility to stockpile these products.
  • A complete ban on use of all HCFCs including reclaimed/recycled product will be in place by 1st January 2015.

The Fact Finder looks to inform the refrigerant  user supply chain on their obligations under the Regulation.
