The big debate: Why aren’t sustainable buildings happening?

Wednesday, October 8 - 11.30am.
Chaired by Robert Higgs, chief executive of the HVCA

With legislation such as the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive and Part L, along with local government driving use of on-site renewables, the UK should be awash with ‘green’ building projects. But truly sustainable buildings are still a rarity. In spite of developments in techniques such as computer modelling, and low carbon technologies for heating and cooling commercial and domestic buildings, the market seems to be sticking to business as usual as far as design and installation are concerned.

So why is this? Are contractors or consultants holding back the market through lack of know-how or skill? Old habits die hard, and all too often systems are specified because they’ve been done that way before, or because that’s what clients seem to want. Sustainable buildings can only be achieved with teamwork, but the industry continues to work in a confrontational way, sticking to the usual silos.

In our debate, we’ll be looking at these and other issues, to get to the heart of what’s holding back the development of more sustainable buildings in the UK.
A wide range of speakers from across the sector will join Robert at Olympia to debate this hugely important issue. M&E Sustainability will help to deliver a 'blueprint' strategy for moving the cause of sustainable buildings forwards afterwards.
