St Andrews goes for sustainable heating & cooling
Specialist Mechanical Services (SMS) of Dundee has been appointed to carry out a sustainable heating and cooling project by the St Andrews Links Trust.
Managing director Graeme Fox, who will provide a regular update on the progress of the project on this website over the coming months, managed to persuade the design team that the clubhouse could be heated AND cooled by a ground source heat pump - with heat recovery as well.
The Castle Course is a new 18 hole course being built on the outskirts of St Andrews because demand on the existing six courses is always so high. SMS already carries out all of the Refrigeration & Air Conditioning work for the Trust at their other two clubhouses, offices and shops. The main contractor is Clachan Construction of Perth.
"The original plan by the Trust was to fit a ground source heat pump feeding underfloor heating only," explains Graeme. "When the building manager told me their plans I asked if they had considered VRF to combine the heating load with the cooling needed for many areas in the building. I took the Architect and three prominent members of the Trust staff to visit Mitsubishi's Hatfield office to let them see the City Multi ground source units working and sold them on the idea of simultaneous heating and cooling with heat recovery all supplied by ground source."
Currently, the most visible element of the project is the underfloor piping. The ductwork is starting to go in and soon we will see some of the ducted air handling and heat recovery ventilation units appearing. Watch this space!
